Any chance i could use the Spin pole off a Merit 22 that i have laying around? My boat came with a spinnaker but no pole, which Catalina Direct has listed for $500(!) or are there any cheaper alternatives?
Thanks. this boat is awesome.

If you are racing, then your pole cannot exceed the J measurement. If not, you can go up about a foot to 18 inches and down about 6". The J on a merit is 8.25' that's a pretty big variance in the wrong direction.
You'll probably need to replace the trigger releases and the bridles, but that is fairly inexpensive. Rivets, an inexpensive rivet gizmo, wire and a drill should be all you need. (when you measure, be sure to deduct the length of both end fittings from the J measurement to get the total pole length.)
Depending on inner and outer diameter you'll be out the door for under 150.
An 110.5 to 11 foot pole works much better. You can not use a short pole. The pole would rotate inside the forestay. Yes you have a guy, foreguy and pole lift but the forces can be huge. Rotating the pole inside the forestay when heated up would be a disaster!
I traded my whisker pole for a spin pole off a Catalina 27. Look for something like that.

YEah, good point - forgot to mention if you downsize you have to fly it fairly high. You couldn't do it with a single mounted pole - you'd need it on a track to raise it up.
