In addition to our C25 we have an old 82 20' Mercruiser with an old fashion 165hp inboard. It was recently removed an overhauled and now starts and runs well. The problem is it won't engage into forward gear and when engaged in reverse it stops. The linkage cables seem to be working and manipulating a small black gearbox with a microswitch & cam on top. A black hose (or two?) runs from it down somewhere.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like lower unit problems to me, and another repair bill

The only way anyone can even begin to help you is for you to tell us what kind of transmission it is.

Transmission on lower end you say. That makes sense,,,gotta be a tranny in there somewhere. (I don't know much about engines. As I said the engine was just put in. Maybe I should check the tranny's fluid.
How do you tell what kind of transmission it is?

Are you talking about a true inboard (shaft through the bottom), or a stern-drive (I/O) system? If the latter (generally synonymous with "Mercruiser"), I'm guessing the problem is in the stern-drive. Mechanics love 'em and hate 'em. It was the lowest-price power option for my boat, and I rejected it.

There's a variety of engine forums on the web for us $!nkp*++er$--for example, www.marineengine.com/boat-forum/.

Oh boy, I guess you need to find out what kind of engine it is, go to the maker's web site and download the owners manual, find out where and how fluids are added/changed and go from there. This is all probably a waste of time though, it sounds like something's broke or needs major adjusment. You probably should just take it in, let'em fix it and see if you can get the mechanic to educate you on the periodic maintenance as much as possible.
