Always happens! After I went on about using my icebox for storage yesterday, I got an unpleasant surprise today.

I was out today when I started to smell something like natural gas. I remembered I have some small butane canisters for the stove.

I thought a half-used canister developed a leak and checked it out. No problem with that canister.

I followed my nose, which led me to the galley. I opened the cooler and the acrid smell of butane came spuming out.

Power was off except the VHF - I did not want any fires or explosions on board.

I dug everything out and three butane canisters were on the bottom floating in about 1" of water. The bottom seams started to rust.

One was empty. The other two were still partially full, and felt cold to the touch.

I was careful not to move things quickly, did not want to shake things up or cause a spark.

The mystery is now: where did all the water come from? The galley sink is not connected to the cooler drain. Could it somehow be condensation?

Is the box still hooked to the drain? An open valve can still let in water through the sea cock or rain leak letting water run along the counter and into the box. This box has been trouble for every boat. Find the source and proceed. To box or drain. I finally made mine an ice box with much installation and two outlets. The last method I used to drain box is with a sump with a bilge pump, float switch and a plastic box with a top. It pumps into the hose of the keel cable and has worked the last two NW Cruises. I did take pictures but can't get them right now, it's late.

Yep, we were sailing around the Bass islands - forgot to close the galley seacock and lake water backed into the icebox, melted all our ice and left a couple-three inches of water.

Butane is heavier than air and shouldn't be stored in the cabin. Be careful.

At this point, there is no more butane on the boat, and nothing in the icebox. I had previously disconnected the drain hose, and plugged the drain with a wooden plug. I cannot figure out how ANY water got in there, except for condensation, or maybe a cabin leak?
