I was given a 1987 15hp Evinrude with alternator and starter. Problem is, if I am measuring it right, it has a 18in. shaft. Motor is in great shape, runs well, charges with no problem. Anyway to alter the mount or lengthen the shaft so it will fit my boat?

Hi Bruce,

I think that if you leave the engine as it is, you will find that it is unsuitable for the C25. If you lower the outboard bracket so that the engine's prop is in the water, the engine itself will be in the water too if you are sailing with much more than a 15 degree heel.....not good for the engine. Motor sailing will be out of the question as on one tack the engine will probably suck water into the carb and die - while on the other tack the prop (and water intake for cooling the engine) will be completely out of the water. Also not good for the engine.

You might be able to purchase a long-shaft adaptor kit though that would get the prop into the water without lowering the bracket location on the transom. The long-shaft adaptor kit generally has a casting that bolts on between the lower unit and the existing casting. The kit also has all of the "hook-ups" to lengthen the drive shaft, gear shifter linkage, exhaust, etc.

So, I'd say check first to see if you can still get the adaptor kit.

Bruce I had the same motor you are talking about. Nice little motor and it is the same size and weight as the 9.9hp. The extra hp doesn't do you much good but hey, if you have it, what can it hurt? Anyway, I added the extension kit that Bill refers to about 5 years ago. You can get the parts you need through Seaway Marine in Seattle. They handle lots of older outboard motor parts so those of you who have older motors and need parts you might give them a call also. I have their phone number at work so I will try to remember to look it up for you. I remember talking to Dave..... well I will check. They shipped what I needed in a week.

Seems to me the parts cost around 1 boatunit ($100) and I had the local motor shop put it on for about 1 1/2 BU's.
