Hi there,

One of the C25's I'm considering buying has a single backstay. How tough is it to add a new chainplate to the transom. I would like to add a CD adjustable backstay. It seems you would have to cut a square hole, and make it leakproof.

Hi Mike,

I started to answer your post this A.M. then realized I'd forgotten some pertinent facts and deleted my remarks. Well I was out sailing today and I was right to delete. When I added a second backstay it was to add a SSB antenna not to have an adjustable backstay but the technique is the same. It will be necessary to drill out a space behind the bumper strip and then Dremmel tool the area smooth. You'll need a slot equal to the dimention of the chain plate that you will be using. I removed about 1/8 to 3/16 inch, thereabout. The chainplate requires a bolt be installed through the transom and to secure the nut on the other side. I had to drill a hole about 2" in diameter. To cover this I made a teak disc cover and screwed it over the opening. To drill and install the bolt it will be necessary to bend out the aluminum bumperstrip and when having done this it will want to be replaced, so judicially bend out the bumper strip lest it be deformed when trying to reinstall it. I glopped the surrounding area with 5200 and closed it all up.

osmepneo came with a split backstay so I can't add anything right now about "how-to" do it. I will look the next time I'm at the boat, probably this w/e and report back for your information.

I believe mine is located on the outside edge of the port and starboard sides. This I need to verify.

As far having a split backstay, it is a great feature, especially when I want to rack the mast aft.
