I'm installing an Edson Pedestal guard on my wheel steering this weekend. For any of you who have done this before, I would certainly appreciate any tips or tricks!
Lon, we didn't install the pedestal guard on JD, it was installed as part of the purchase.
However, I did have to remove it so that we could run cables through the tubes for instruments.
I would recommend that you make through holes in the cockpit deck just slightly smaller than the tube.
When I installed out GPS at the helm, I raised the Pedestal guard, then drilled through the cockpit floor inside the stanchion base mounting. Did the usual drill, clean out wider than the drilled hole. Then I put duct tape on the underside of the cockpit floor to prevent drips of GRP Resin which I used to fill the hole. Then drilled through the resin.
If I were to install a pedestal guard from scratch, I would put holes beneath both tubes. And I would do the resin thing for every bolt that goes into the cockpit deck.
And... if you do plan on running cables through the tubes, make sure to debur the exit holes in the tube to prevent cutting of the electronics cables due to chafing.
Oh! and tape a 2' square piece of cardboard to the floor of the aft berth beneath the pedestal when doing this.. .that will catch any resin leaks.
