Ok. I got my 1980 SR / SK a couple months now. I am really starting to enjoy her.. However the prior owner had the "catastrophic keel wire break" meaning that it is patched up around the dinette right seat. and the only place the boat is taking in water is around the dinette/keel area.. Not much.. it reaches the water level (i think) and stops.. I don't know for sure what happened, but these things are never pretty when they DO happen...I knew that this was not a good thing when i got her, but for the price i could not refuse.

here is a pic of the area i am talking about the arrow illustrates the angle of the second pic.

these are some pics i took from the underside of the interior floor..It's amazing what you can do with a digital cam!

the blue line indicates how far the water comes in.. it stops there and no more water comes in.. unless it rains.. but that is a different story

She has handled great, the work was done on the keel in 1997, also, the boat was never really uesd from 1999-2002.

The boat is always in the saltwater... I am thinking about taking her out of the water soon. I need peace of mind. What i need from you guys is pictures and input on the steps i should take to get this repaired.. I have one pic of the "catastrophic damage" repair... and wanted to know if there were more. Also i remember seeing a whole pictorial on the conversion kit to fin keel.. anyone know where i can see that again? how much is a fin keel anyways? shipping come free? ;)
heheh

ok any input would be great.. ooops i almost forgot.. i have the "schematics"of the whole keel inner-workins from the catalina catalogue.. what are the key items that i should replace.. wire... for sure.. the ball and pin i gotta check for wear and tear.. what ese? anything need to be replaced on the pivot point?

thanks for all your help

marco

Marco,

Yikes!...You may be the first with a water ballasted, swing keel C25. I would find the source of your water intrusion and have it repaired immediately. Have you seen Ken Cave's swing keel trunk repair from the Tech Tips section? Here is a photo from that article

and here is a link.

For the ultimate swing keel repair, see this article from Mike Leyden's Wing Keel Installation By Bill Holcomb
