Seeing all the new members to the forum raised my guilt level to the point where after 3 years of reading and searching out advice on all the common issues experienced in keeping a 30 year old boat in cruising condition -and specifically the Catalina 25 - I made the move and joined the assoc. and forum. I have 40 years of sailing experience - teaching and cruising - in the Pacific NW and for the last 3 years on a Cat 25. It was purely by grace that I ended up purchasing a 'well equipped but needing maintenance' Cat 25 instead of the mistake I almost made. I would probably still be working to get it in the water. With the help of this forum I made the required basic improvements - thru-hulls, bow-eye, plumbing, etc. - and went sailing. At first I treated sailing the Cat 25 the same way I did when we owned a larger boat - with inboard diesel - and was kept at the dock as opposed to on a trailer. As a matter of necessity (and many a story to tell) we have become better sailors and boaters in general - as you do when confronted with new experiences and situations. We've learned what 'go with the flow' really means and have come to learn a lot about the Cat 25 and its use as a cruising sailboat - specifically here in the Pacific NW. We sometimes go for a week at a time and often go for a 2 or 3 day weekend. Here in the NW we have everything from water as smooth as glass to 20 - 30 kts. with 3 - 4' seas - all in the same day - plus places where currents can be 4 - 5 kts. in either direction. Sometimes we have to wait a day for favorable tides and winds to head for home safely. From rig to hull, boats take a pounding. This past spring I replaced all the keel hardware incl. sleeved the keel and replaced the winch and have confidence in the system. There is much good advice to be gleaned from this forum and its archives. It is only with the great support here and with that of Catalina Direct that these boats are able - with active ownership - to live such long lives still sailing safely. At age 61 I don't know how many more years I'll be able to keep doing it all but I intend on sailing as long as I can and hopefully on this boat. With the numerous improvements we have made, we thoroughly enjoy the time we spend on it. Over time I'll share a few of the good ones - the improvements and the good times. See you on the forum. I'm still with the 79 C25 and the Forum Members have been support that makes the boat safer and easier to use. Great pictures and thanks for the sharing. See you next summer as I will have my 73 in the Islands.
