The trick with ebay is to be there to respond in the final minute. I've lost out on a number of deals because I couldn't be online in the final seconds and was beat by $1.00.
Right, I usually hit "Enter" on my final bid 10 seconds before the auction ends. Or you can set it up to automatically bid to your highest bid in needed. That way if you "win" it then fine but if not then it was over your price anyway.
Use PhantomBidder. Put in your highest bid, schedule it for 6 seconds before the auction ends. You don't expose your hand for others to outbid until the last moment. I've been using it for years and don't often fail. Ed
