Police were notified, and a subsequent search discovered more bad news: Other items were stolen, including a replica of the America's Cup trophy Bill Koch won in 1992.

"It was devastating," Hayes said. "It's like the worst nightmare of a museum person.

"It's the first time it's ever happened" in the museum's 19-year history, he said. "I've never had anything broken into, never had anything stolen."

The trophy replica is worth an estimated $50,000, said Lt. Barry VonFange, head of the Wichita police burglary section. The two Sayers footballs are worth about $500 apiece.

considering the craftsmanship and materials, $50k is a reasonable price...maybe the Association needs a cup?

Looks just like our coffee service here at home!

Seriously, kind of a stupid thing to steal, wouldn't you think? I expect that would be extremely hard to fence.
Tough luck for the museum.

They wont sell it, they'll melt it. Silver has gone up just like gold.

The good news, I hope, is that it was probably insured. Since it's a reproduction anyway, another reproduction can be made.

I think Randy's probably right. It's already been melted.

No way, I'm not going to melt it. Does anybody want to buy this thing? The wife thinks its a little too much for the dining room table. Call me at 1-800-wantyourstuffback. Second thought,I could sell it to the NHL.

Hey Scott - that may be the only way the leafs will ever fill their trophy shelf. Not a bad idea.

Ehh, pocket change for Bill Koch - maybe he'll replace it.

But, on the other hand, why the heck would anyone create a replica of a trophy in the first place?

He built and donated the boat house to house it too. Remember KOCH is a Wichita company and Bill had a law suit against Charles back then. He was massaging the venue pool of potential jurors. But that is another topic est left for drinks and a cigar.
