Hi everyone.
Here is what I am looking for. I have been restoring my 1977 Catalina 25 for the last two years. I am close to putting it in the water here in So. California, probable in the spring. Even though I have a trailer I plan to hoist it with a crane to put it in the water. I have noted here in So. Cal. most marinas have soooooo much traffic. Not too cool for a newbie to start to learn to sail. I am looking for the least congested port so getting in & out of port won't be a complete heart attack and the learning experience will be more pleasurable. I don't know if I will be able to get mooring but the worst case scenario will be I will have to stay at the transient dock for a couple of weeks. I also plan to take the trailer home & over the weekend rebuild the trailer. Probable better to sail weekdays to reduce the boat traffic anyway.
So please chime in with all opinions.
I thank you, Pat

Sounds like a more expensive, but reasonable approach. Anything that reduces the stress of the first outing will be helpful; they will probably even raise your mast if you're not comfortable with that yet. Keep it easy with a lot of small steps and you will look forward to coming back.

I would recommend getting together with the captain of another Catalina-25/250/Capri-25 to "start to learn to sail" before you finish your restoration and then splash your own boat next Spring. Check out the "sticky" topic for one or more of the Port Captains in your area.

I learned the basics by sailing a number of times with an old friend on his boat under various conditions, and that led me a buy my own Catalina-25 after I moved away.

A crowded marina is ok, because you can have all the skills to handle your boat better than most sailors after you practise each task a few times.

Or fly to DC and come sailing on my boat before the snow flies here in Maryland. Please bring your own PFD and ski clothes. Temps today are in the high 30's. (I guess that will convince you to find someone near LA instead!)

Pat, I am in SoCal, Newport to be exact. I have a C250 and am a Port Captain so I would love to take you out. We could talk suggestions re marinas.

John.
30 degree ocean spray would drive me to buy a trawler, but thanks for the offfffffer.
