I am in the initial stages of planing a spring cruise down the west coast of Florida. So I decided to replace some of my worn-out paper charts, the large type, that usually need to be rolled up. While at West Marine I stumbled upon Richardsons' Waterproof Chartbook for the waters from Tampa Bay to Cape Flamingo and the northern part of the Keys.
It's small enough to fit in your lap, but large enough to see all the soundings. Also, you just flip the page, and your next chart continues on. I haven't seen any of their other chartbooks, but this one is excellent.

They're excellent chartbooks. A tip: if the plastic pages get wet, dry them before you put the book away. Moisture between the pages will stay there for weeks, especially if the water is salty.
A little further south through New Pass, you will find the Sarasota Sailing Squadron http://sarasotasailingsquadron.org/ which, I believe, is friendly to transients.
Continue south to the Venice Inlet. I keep my boat here in slip just south of the Venice Yacht Club. Just a few minutes from the inlet entrance and to the south, you will find a well protected area. Here you will also find The Crow's Nest - http://www.crowsnest-venice.com/marina/index.cfm

Thanks Don B. We have anchored at Longboat pass numerous times. It's one of our favorites. We made it down to Venice inlet on a trip a few years ago, we anchored in Dona Bay. We have made it as far south as Tween Waters Marina on Captiva Island, but that was in our powerboat.
I am hoping to make it all the way down to Goodland for the sole purpose of doing the "The Buzzard Lope" and having a drink at Stans Idle Hour. http://www.stansidlehour.net/
Also, with possible stops at Marina Jack, Cabbage Key, Tween Waters (for dinner at the Old Captiva House) and Fort Myers Beach.

There's a pretty little municipal marina in Venice that only has space for 4-5 boats, but it has rest rooms and showers, and it's free. I haven't been there in years, but just checked on the internet and it appears that it's still there. It's on the ICW just south of Venice Inlet, and it's called Higel Park. You can walk to town and restaurants. In addition to being free, it's convenient, because it's very close to Venice inlet, and, if you want to sail in the Gulf the next day, it offers easy access. If the dock space is occupied when you arrive, there's a good anchorage on the other side of the ICW. The following hyperlink shows its location.
Higel Park is still there, but, from what I have read, you are no longer allowed to tie-up overnight. The only problem with the adjacent anchorage, to my knowledge, is that the ICW through that area is not a "No Wake" zone.
That's correct Steve...Higel Park is very well maintained and you will find my boat 13 slips directly south of that park...In 10 minutes I can be out through Venice inlet with deep water in all directions.
Several sailboats are currently moored just outside the Venice Yacht Club and there is nice protection for anything out of the south/west/north.
There are a few empty slips where I'm at and if interested, I could inquire about a 1 or 2 night stay. Steve is right on about the short walking distance to downtown with several shops/pubs to choose from.
