He looks a bit like the guy in Treasure Island (his name was Gunn)that was marooned on an island for many years before Capn Long John Silver and the others found him...or did Gunn find them ?

But maybe the guy in the kayak was another one of those 16 year olds that started off...in his case must have been 4-5 decades ago...maybe they just forgot about him till now.
