Just got a MT4G running android 2.2 and it is an amazing phone. (For those of you who have T-Mobile,they are giving away smart phones 2/11 and 2/12 via rebate and reduced to $20 for unlimited internet)

One of the main reasons I got this phone is that it runs at 4G network speeds which is comparable to cable or DSL. What really got me excited is that it serves as a mobile hot spot and since I sail in a lake 30 minutes east of downtown Dallas, this will enable me to run any WIFI device like an IPAD or my laptop on board with broadband speeds. I see this being mostly useful for running Netflix for the kids, running Pandora Radio (Which is incredibly awesome) over the radio,staying in touch through the office on SKYPE or for when I'm laying around on board being bored.

It's a huge touchscreen and will be handy on it's own for weather forecasts etc. and also serves as an MP3 player. I can't believe I stayed with a Blackberry this long.

All that being said, any of you guys know any good android apps for sailing? Hopefully they're not all Iphone...

Phone sounds great too! My T-mobile G1 phone is over 2 years old, and I'm hanging on to it for now, the MT4G would be a good replacement, but I'm probably a few months (or a hundred new phone designs) away from replacing mine

You can get the G2 4G or the My Touch 4G free today at a T Mobile store if you re up your contract. You pay $199 today, and get a rebate for $199. Plus instead of paying $30 monthly for data, today you get it for $20. If you have T Mobile and it's time for a new phone, it's worth taking a look at as it will save you a couple hundred bucks.

The only phone on the horizon that I know about that might be worth waiting for is a Samsung Galaxy S 4G. It has the same specs as the MTG4G, but a better screen. It releases in March. I'd been doing my research when this sale popped up.

What is amazing to me is that as I type I have Netflix running a documentary about PT-109 on another tab. I disabled my home network and I'm using my phone as the wireless network for my laptop. This opens a whole new range of possibilities being that I'm in a 4G covered area. I did verify with T-Mobile that my Internet is unlimited.

As far as the G2 VS the MT4G? The G2 has an 800 ghz processor compared to the MTG4 1.0 ghz processor. They are both very fast, the G2 is more of a vanilla android experience and has an awesome qwerty keyboard. I opted for the MTG4 as I can put a protective gell cases around it and it seemed a touch more robust plus it has the dual cameras for video conference and a lot of nice features like the voice recognition for when driving (genius button) I'll admit, there is a learning curve with the touch screen keyboard.

And we usta call all this vaporware. Pandora rocks, have yet to try Spype. Won't be long before who knows what will be out.

LOL, that's what I meant.

So went sailing Saturday and Sunday and the phone worked perfectly. Set up a Bob Marley station on Pandora and ran the aux cable through the stereo and used the USB cable to charge the phone off of radio. Set up the mobile WIFI which let the teen age daughter surf on the IPAD. Took some nice pictures and some 720p video.

The one thing about these phones is that they chew through the battery quickly.

I have one on my Android/G2 called Marine Traffic. It's a GPS mapping system that locates ports, cargo ships, tankers, passenger, tugs, yachts, etc. in your surrounding area. Check it out!

Ya I have similar on my Iphone called Ship Finder. It is a free app.I am looking forward for the new Iphone 5 in June or July. I still have a 2nd generation. I love my apps but please dont tell my wife. hehe

Found out it's $45 a month to generate it's own hot spots (thinking about the laptop). Going to take some getting used to as far as web surfing etc. But man, the possibilities!

Nice phone,my phone is an HTC as well. Yikes on the charge, I don't get charged anything over my normal $20 monthly data charge to create a hot spot. That's why I'm dreading this T Mobile buyout.

As far as your wind and weather sites, bookmark them on the phone. Then go to the bookmark, hold your finger on it for a couple seconds and that will drop the link to your home screen. This way you don't have to rely on an app for your weather info and it's readily available.

You can root the phone and download the Google OEM Wireless Tether app. Unless you are streaming NetFlix (i.e. using an obscene amount of bandwidth) AT&T won't know that you are tethering. Wired tether (USB) and they will know.

Yea, I've read about doing that on most smart phones. Its already capable but the phone providers turn it off because they don't want other people leaching ur internet for free. I read about how to do it but it seemed a little complicated so I'm going to get one of my friends to do it. Lol

My HTC MT4G has built in wireless tethering. In settings under "Wireless and Networks" simply enable "Portable Wi-Fi hotspot". When you look at it from another device, it looks like a password protected router. Before you download anything, you might see if your HTC has this option as well.

Hmm, you're right, the exact options are in there, and seems to turn on. I'll have to check its availability through my laptop when I get home. When I did a search on the subject it sounded like it was unavailable and had to be programmed.

That would be awesome to stream netflix to my internet LED tv on my boat.

Yup! However, mobile coverage on the lake isn't their fastest speed. It's the basic speed according to their map. I don't have problems d/l'ing anything at the lake though.

Yeah you should be fine. My friend streams netflix from his iPhone on his C-27 on his flat screen, but when he dips into my hot spot the picture gets real crisp.

Yea, I bought a Vizio 22" LED that's internet ready and accepts a 12v connection. It's on sale at target for $249 right now.

Says $259 online, but it's $249 in stores:
