I took this home today for $5 It would be nice to bolt over the through hull I want to use as for a washdown pump.

Molly Brown: 1967 Grand Banks 32-#34. Bronze, mahogany, teak, oak, with 120hp diesel to push all 10 tons. Currently an abuser of the bilge pump. Also... The Tall Rig Spirit: 1978, #973, Cast Fe Fin Keel on a Trailer

Sailboat definitely use them--for inputs to the raw-water side of their inboard engine cooling systems, where a blockage could be a huge problem. There's no reason for you not to use one, but I wouldn't call it critical.

I wondered if they took away from the smooth hull experience, maybe even noisy on a particular heel. To minimize, grate is pointed backwards if your only using the water draw at dock, right?

Any intake can be clogged by anything that floats against it. Around here, unprotected engine, AC, refrigeration, washdown and other intakes can suck a jellyfish into the system, clogging it. Sometimes jellyfish are so abundant in my marina that, when a system stops working, its the first thing you look for, before you think of replacing a $200. pump. I spent half a day helping a friend remove and rebuild his engine water intake pump, and we found out it was clogged by a jellyfish. If there's a screen over the intake, then whatever is clogging it will usually just drop off if you shut off the intake pump and wait a few minutes. Lesson learned!

That cat has a history of getting in shots. The minute I set something up for ebay etc and grab the camera, he jumps up and wants to know what is more important than him. I call this photo Sail Cat
