Hey all:

Buying a winch holder. Where exactly have people put theirs for maximum handiness and minimum intrusion? And... what did you attach it with? Rivets? Screws? Machine screws? Gorilla Glue? (Ha ha, just kidding...)

Thanks,
Carlos

Confession : I don't know what a winch holder is. Do you mean a holder for the winch handle?

He's probably talking about the white plastic winch handle holders. Can't help you, though. I just use the 2 coaming pockets. Keep one handle in each while sailing. However, I would most likely mount one on the bulkhead beside the companionway opening, or right below the companionway off to one side.

I use the coaming pockets as well to store my winch handles. With the cockpit being rather smallish, I'd hesitate mounting the holder where it can be an ankle biter/trip hazard or where it may snag a sheet.

Duh. My brain is dead from not having sailed since Jan. 5. Of course I meant a WINCH HANDLE HOLDER.

I have found that throwing it in the coaming pocket can get dicey during a race when the trimmer wants to grab it quickly.

Thank you for the suggestions.

I installed strong canvas bags just inside the companionway. My gloves were always there, and handles , binoculars, whatever needed the priority position at the time was in there. I think that is my inflatable PFD in this picture.

I would imagine the most accessible place (without being an obstacle) would be on the cabin bulkhead right next to the companionway trim--not too much of an obstruction for leaning against the bulkhead. Small SS sheet metal screws work well in fiberglass--drill to the size just smaller than the threads.

All that said, my handles were in the coaming boxes. But things were more relaxed on Passage...

Frank--your pix are too big.

Simple and nice idea -- Frank, where did you get the canvas bag?

I had 2 sunbrella bags made which attach to the snaps for the pop top cover, one for each side of the companionway. Planned for halyard tails, but i am finding they are very handy for all kinds of stuff!

Mine is just forward of the manual bilge pump handle. Easy reach by trimmer. No problems with tangling in sheets.

I mostly raced my C25, and kept one cheap (about $15.00) "floating" plastic, non-locking winch handle in each cockpit coaming box. That type of handle is light weight, and, if you drop one in the excitement of the race, it won't be as likely to ding your gelcoat. With a winch handle on each side, the jib tailer has a winch handle close at hand at all times, and he won't have to worry about accidentally dropping it overboard. I didn't find the cockpit coaming boxes inconvenient to use. I could grab a winch handle as quickly there as anywhere else, and ideally, the tailer should know when he's going to need a winch handle, and get it out in advance.

Mine came installed in the cockpit. I've seen several here, so I assumed it was where the factory put it. It doesn't get in the way here.

Since they're not stock items, and are not sold by CD, I guess these white rubber gizmos were installed on some of our boats as after-market items.

Even cheaper - 4" dia fire hose. No gunk collects in teh bottom. Go to your fire hall and ask if they have any old hose they are getting rid of. Use snaps to attach it and you can stow it at teh end of teh day.

Yes, I ordered it from Defender. $15. I also ordered a floating winch handle. Right now I have what came with the boat - a very long and heavy metal handle.

A fellow on ebay made my bags, they had very strong elastic on the front only, I used twist fasteners to mount them. They had a 3" mesh trip along the back so things would dry.
