Looking for recomendation for which mount would be best for my Honda 9.9 long shaft 4 stroke. Weight listed in manual is 97 lbs. I've seen a few posts of people who say with the 4 spring mount from Catalina Direct they have to push down with their foot to lock it in the lower position. Anyone using the three spring with a motor this size. CD lists the 3 spring as handling up to 95 lbs. which may be sufficent.
As springs lose tension over time you might "spring" for the 4 spring version. Also, if you leave the bracket up the raised position while away from the boat the springs may last longer.
I would talk to Kevin or Lowell at CD. CD came up with the idea of offeriing a 3 or 4 spring model over Garhauer's original 2 spring design.
The upper limit for the three spring model is 95 lbs. I have a 3 spring model for my Tohatsu which is listed as 92.6 lbs. At that weight I have to shove it down a bit to lower it. I also have to use some exertion to raise it. Neither is too bad. So if you use the three spring model you will need to lift some of the weight of the engine when raising it. If you use the four spring you will probably have to push down some to lower it. I would personally rather have to pull it up then push it down. Leaning over the transom I can exert a lot more energy when pulling than pushing. The four spring lower limit is 95 lbs. so you are very close.
Has anyone disengaged a spring on this mount? It looks like it would be possible. If so, you could purchase a four spring model, then pop a spring if need be.
I unhooked 1 spring by pulling one of the pins thus leaving the 4th spring in for the future. With my 7.5 Chrysler this worked out pretty good. I now am putting on a 9.9 Mercury that weighs much more so I am going to put the pin back in tomorrow.
Thanks for the replies. Looks like the way to go is get the 4 spring model and disengage one if it needs it and save it for when the other springs get a little tired!
Sounds like I need a new motor mount... I have a 9.9 Marnier(111 lbs) and it's a struggle to lift it. When I am on the boat Saturday, I am going to check for what type of mount I have.
Unless a P.O. has replaced the original mount, you most likely have a 2-spring mount. At 111 lbs, I think you'll be looking at the 4-spring model, or maybe the 3-spring one with a block & tackle to the stern rail if you plan on replacing the motor anytime soon. The 9.8hp Tohassu 25" shaft is 93 lbs.
I wont be replacing the motor anytime soon. I think it should be good for several more years. I am hoping to haul the boat out in the fall/winter to do a lot of stuff to it... that's the time to replace the motor mount.
I went with the 4 spring from CD about 3-4 years ago. Glad I did as the springs tend to weaken somewhat over time and I can still get it out of the water without pulling my back apart. Yes, I do have to push it down with my foot to lock it but it's worth the trade off.
My '83 came with a ONE spring mount, and it was a real bear to move the thing. I assessed my motor, an '83 9.9 Evinrude that weighed 88 lbs., and got the TWO spring mount. Sure wished I would have bought the THREE spring mount, but it's a lot better, and it's not worth me buying another mount.
So I think a three spring mount would be okay, but a four spring would probably be better.
