While replacing my bent toggle bolt I discovered this little line of rust on the weld. Would wire brushing it and throwing some clear nail polish over it be fine or should I try a passivating process? I read about Frog's issues with rust but didn't ever see a final resolution... basically, is this the start of a frightening environment? (I don't see it anywhere else yet)
It could be surface corrosion. I would buff it out with a polishing compound on my dremel and reinspect frequently.
I have replaced 3 of the toggles on JD. When replacing the lower shrouds (cat claws in the wire) we opted to change from the enclosed (like shown in Will's pic) to the Open Turnbuckles. Eventually we will change them all to the open version.
I'm now a bit OCD about making sure the toggles are correctly oriented before raising the mast. And I avoid stepping on them when the mast is down (that's how I bent one of them!)
I didn't buy from them, the new shrouds came with the open turnbuckles. I'll be changing the back stay to open turnbuckle shortly, it's a pain fiddling with the covering tube each time we raise and lower the mast.
When stainless steel is welded it loses its rust prevention properties and has to be re-passivated. WM sells a product called Wichinox ($28 a tube) which does an excellent job.
