So this is the week the boat comes out to replace the pin, hangers, bolts and add a bushing to take up the slack due to enlarged hole around the pin. Will also add the centering spacers.

2 questions remain:
1. what epoxy is suggested for the installation of the bushing. The current whole is sizable, and I'm wondering what epoxy (brand, mix, configuration) has the strength for the job.
2. How best to tell what thickness of spacers to use, and how snug a fit should it be. Can you eyeball it easily enough once underneath?

Anyone out there who has done this job, and wouldn't mind being on standby for last minute questions???? That would be great.

Lastly, the hope is to have this and a few other minor jobs in 3 days on the hard. Am I nuts? I do have an experienced boat builder/mechanic sitting in on helping to move the keel around and general advice, but he has not done this specific job before.

Cheers.

Just shop around for the strongest slow cure epoxy adhesive you can find locally. It is only loaded in compression and modest shear, so you can probably find something at lowes; it isn't hard to find an epoxy with 10,000 pound compression and sear strength, and while that is probably enough, stronger is better. I drilled the pin hole by hand and got good results, but if the hole is larger than the bushing I would have it built up with weld and redrilled. If you are doing nylon/stainless spacers on the pin, eyeball for a snug fit and finalize trial assembles. Mine was very tight assembly, but a 1500 pound keel takes care of that pretty quickly. Send an email if you didn't get mine and I'll send my phone number.

Great advice Dave. Received your email and sent one in return.

Much appreciated on both counts.

Hi Rookie I just finished the same job as what you are looking at... The sleeve from Cat direct was 1 1/4 diameter my pin hole was about 1 7/16 .. I found a machine shop who made a new pin out of stainless that was 1 7/16 For $40.00 .. The hole was very irregular in shape I had to file a couple places but other spots had over 1 1/2 " wear.. I just used some epoxy from a hardware store 2500 # and 15 min working time and filled it in as best I could .?? I temporarily placed the hangars in place and measured the opening (about 3 3/16 ") and measured the keel thickness thru the pin hole and added two big stainless washers and 2 big nylon washers and it made a tight fit .
Note --I filled the worn spots as best I could and then pushed the new pin through the glop after covering the ends with adhesive tape. and felt good about the fix... Time will tell I did not weld anything..
