We're thinking of getting a Boomkicker from Catalina Direct. If you have one.... how easy is it to detangle when dropping the mast or to setup after raising the mast.
Works great. Easy to install and take off, no tools required after the initial installation. You slide the boom end into a bracket and pin the mast end. Takes all of 30 seconds. Does not interfere with poptop at all or the tent enclosure.
Our Boomkicker is on it's way. So to are a pair of double sheave deck organizers to run the lines aft to the cockpit.
When the boomkicker is installed, I'll also install the two extra line clutches (outside each of the port and stbd existing clutches) then I intend to run the vang line aft on the stbd side and the reefing line on the port side.
Randy et.al. do you know the distance from the end of the boom to the boomkicker attachment on the underside of the boom? Our boomkicker is on it's way (somewhere) and I am putting the mast up (still on the trailer) and working on reorganizing the lines from mast etc to the cabin and wondered if while I'm at it I could prep the boom for the attachment.
I don't know the distance on the boom for the bracket and will not be at the boat for a few days. The BK comes with good instructions and it won't take you long to install it. We did not shorten the BK rods. Worked fine as delivered.
After getting the 2 line reefing setup on Sunday (very nice!) waiting for the Boomkicker to arrive.
It arrived today at lunch time. I finished work at 7:40pm, got home, ordered a pizza, had the boomkicker setup before the pizza arrived!
I removed the gooseneck plate from the mast (actually just released the screws on one side) so that I could slide the rods that hold the lower mast end of the boomkicker hardware and the boom swivel preventer. Slide the rods inside the sail track from the gate to below the gooseneck then secured the hardware and reinstalled the gooseneck.
Clamped the boom fitting to the ridge along the underside of the boom with the two 'plastic' spacers, center punched the 3 hole locations, drilled and tapped them with the supplied drill and tap. Secured the metal hardware with the 3 screws. Then drilled one hole on each side of the plastic spacers, tapped them and secured them with dome headed screws.
All done!
When we get to the marina on Friday, I'll attach the boom and adjust the heights of the two mast fittings and install the boomkicker.
Very neat assembly (modified from current pic on the boomkicker.com site)
