Does anyone paint there outboard props? A friend and I (another Catalina 25 owner) were both wondering if this is a maintenance project that needs to be addressed. Both of us are located in the great lakes, the paint is worn and the original propellers seem to be aluminum. Does bare aluminum do well in fresh water?
It doesn't need to be painted so long as you raise the engine or tilt it so that the prop is out of the water when you're done for the day. (I occasionally see outboard props with algae or barnacles growing on them.}
This stuff is good to coat a prop and shaft that remain in the water, but it's expensive.
Glen, mine is not painted. I usually raise outboard out of water after each use. I also wash with brush and hose it down with fresh water. On 2 occasions, I have left motor in water. I come back to find growth. I simply brush it off. Its more of cosmetics to me. I would not worry about damage, if that is your concern. The main concern is making sure it is not nicked, bent or chipped and that the shaft is greased. Steve A
