Went to the boat last Thursday and noticed my tiller stood at a strange angle as I approached. Looked over the stern and saw that my lower pintle was broken. How the heck did that happen? My neighbor just got back from the Bahamas with his 45 footer but he'd tell me if he hit my boat. Then I remembered that some Manatees had been up in the canal the day before. They love to rub themselves on boats and had moved Bamboo around real good before while I was on board at the dock. So I guess one was scratching itself on my rudder and broke a fatigued pintle. Probably a good thing rather than have it break while out. So I went to Catalina Direct and ordered a new one and a tiller cover while I was at it. Got it in the mail day before yesterday, will install it tomorrow and be ready for a Memorial Day sail!

In the fall, we had daily visits from manatees. It was odd to look out the back window and see the boat rocking all around on flat calm water. Glad they didn't break my rudder or pintle
It's really good that manatees don't know how to jump out of the water like the groups of seals around Newport Beach, CA. I've heard they can sink boats in the harbor there!
This picture is off the web, maybe from somewhere else. You get the idea.
Dave, I bet 4 or 5 manatees would do quite a number on the deck of your boat! It's good they don't read these posts on the Forum!
Wow, check that out! I can only imagine the damage those guys can cause. Real glad not to be on the left coast! I wonder, do they have "Seal watch" at the Marinas out there and anti Seal stuff on boats?
Dave, You might find that the holes on the new pintle are not in the same place as your old one, I found this to be the case when I replaced mine on my 87. Yours is an 89 so hopefully its just a swap out otherwise its a fill and re-drill.
Actually Scott what I found is that the PO had put an atypical 4 bolt pintle on there so I'm pretty sure I'll have to re-drill and fill the old holes. Any recommendations on what to use to fill and seal the old holes?
To fill the old holes I would lay the rudder down flat, put a small piece of clear plastic over the back of the holes, tape the plastic on with duct tape, mask the front of the holes with blue painters tape, and pour West System epoxy in to fill the holes up.
If you don't have West System handy with its dispenser-cans, you could use a few jars of MarineTex epoxy for this one use. I would paint over the cured epoxy with white, Rustoleum, oil-based paint, although these old holes should never be seen.
Well, the holes didn't line up but it was no big deal to re-drill and fill the old holes. Got everything put back together Sunday evening and had a great sail yesterday for about 4 hours. Actually had a ENE wind about 7 to 12 that the river did not "channel" so was able to sail south AND back north. Hope Y'all had as good of a day!
