I sail on Lake Michigan and I wouldnt even think about anything less then a 9.9hp. Sure, 95% of the time you wont need the torque from the larger motor but when you get caught in 25 knot headwinds and 5-8 foot waves and its 45 degrees F or less out why mess around.

Yepper.. it would depend on where you are at, and where you are going...
