Hi well I think you are both correct . The rope extension will help a lot . The rope section will swing under if by itself but my similar experiment ( using only rope ) showed that the foot in the steel ladder combined with the help up from the rope step is a big step forward . I am going to try a stainless tube spacer step with anti slip tape as a next and a simple hook from the rope onto the ladder. Winter here so bit limited in trialing it .
NCbrew, there is a 'mounting diagram' on the website of the ladder i posted, the dimensions for the bracket bolts are 14 3/8" high, 4 3/4" wide. total bracket width is 8 3/8". the overall ladder height is only 26" and the CD model is 35".
after much consideration i think i am going to go with the CD model. the extra 10" should get it into the water further, you can see there is a lot of talk in this thread about how awkward it is to get onto the first rung of a ladder that is barely in the water. also it sounds like i will be able to install it easier since the mounting bolts arent separated vertically. this will also allow me to mount the CD ladder lower on the transom. lastly, i am worried about the telescoping action of the other model, any rust and it could become hard to operate.

This is a picture of my quarterberth that my boat-partner took the other day and sent to me. can i barely see the top left corner of a wooden access panel behind that junk there?
which inside looks like this i assume: (this is a picture from pastmember on page one of this thread)
So i can use this panel to install the CD ladder without any cutting or drilling.
