I had to buy some new AGM Optima batts this year and am now also going to upgrade my charger to a Xantrex mutli-stage charger.
Problem is I have a solar panel with charge regulater nicely installed by previous owner.
Given our "weekend" sailing habits wherein we're out on the lake for a day, then back to dock with shore power, can anyone think of a reason to keep the solar panel installed?
If it remains installed, the always-on solar regulator will float charge the batts, which seems to me will "confuse" the much more robust Xantrex battery charger.
It's not always best to keep a shorepower charger going all the time. It leads to sulphation of the battery plates when on float.
You can charge your batteries before you head out and plug back in when you return and are closing up the boat. Then unplug and just leave the solar panel connected during the week. The solar panel will not confuse the charger.
