One of my projects, as it is so hot I don't want to do anything that does not involve water, is fill up a trash can with wawa and mount one of the 2 strokes and see if I can get it to run and then tear down the carb just to try to learn something about the engine. I've never really worked on them much. Other than the basic maintenance, I ususally just take them to the mechanic.
Change out the water pump.
1970s Johnson 2 stroke. Otherwise it is just gonna seize up.

Yepper.. I figure I'll put it on the rack, fire it up and inspect it, and then go order a manual and review the parts available on the internet. Look at it real hard before any teardown. ( pictures )
I might just tear it down and trash it, as it is so old the bolts will probably twist through coming out. I'd better cover it up with anti- seize spray for a few days.
It is in some ways a prelude to working on the '80s Johnson that is on the boat. If I can't get the 70s to run, I will not touch the 80s engine. Take it to a mechanic only.
The weird one to me will be firing up the '50s Johnson.
