I'd like to check out one of these systems post install. Does it perform up to expectation?, is the owner happy?, how long does the battery charge last under real world conditions?, etc.
This would seem like a nice alternative to dealing with the outboard.
Interesting but very expensive - the 7-10 hp equivalent motor is $3500, then you've got installation cost and the purchase and weight of a 48 volt battery pack. The one pictured above is $4,150. I'll stick with my gas outboard! It does appear to have the ability to recharge batteries while under sail. That could be a big benefit to long distance sailors.
Way too expensive. $2k more than the replacement outboard. No thanks. Gonna have to be far more competitive price wise. It won't be much longer before electric power starts to come down in price.
A friend installed one in a 30' wooden full-keeler. He only uses it for short distances, to get in and out of the marina. He recently moved the boat to a new location, a fairly long distance away, and he used an outboard motor to get it there. He understands the limitations of the electric, and he likes it.
I don't know if tht is the same unit but COM-PAC uses a similar set up on their 18ft CAT BOAT. This spring I talked to a gentleman that replaced his old Atomic 4 with a electric motor and love's it.
