I have had my boat for about 20 years and still have projects i wish to complete. one has been to come up with a way to shorten the tiller but yet be able to add length for stronger winds. With a full cockpit moving from side to side for me has been a pain. Any ideas people have done would be great.
I may be interested in this as well but mainly to shorten when I have guests aboard and tacking/changing seat location becomes a logistical issue getting around the tiller. I recall that someone did a fantastic modification of the original tiller by basically shortening it and then mounting the extension on top of it using a metal channel that believe had u-bolt clamps. When he wanted to utilize the extension, he would loosen the clamps and adjust the extension accordingly, then tightening the clamps. It seemed to be an excellent modification from viewing the photos. You may be able to find the photos using the "Search" function at the top right of this Forum. The posting may have been a year or so ago....it will probably take some effort to find it but worth it.
In the January 1999 issue of SAIL magazine there was an article on how to shorten the tiller. Basically used two metal straps and four bolts. The second bolt could be removed so that the tiller could be folded up.
