Went out to the boat today for an afternoon sail. We knew to expect light winds but, bad sailing is better than no sailing. Well, we weren't disappointed -- when we arrived. After dumping the porta potti at the gas dock, we headed out of the marina in ~5kt winds. Hauled up the main and 135% and were making 2-3knots. The wind started to pick up after a few minutes and we were making about 4 knots and healing 20 degrees. I decided I wanted to sail flatter so I decreased the headsail to around 100% and then tacked shortly thereafter. The wind picked up to ~ 12 knots for about 2-3 minutes then STOPPED! I don't mean eased off to the earlier light winds. It was like somebody flipped a switch and the wind stopped blowing. After a few minutes, it puffed every once in a while, just enough to turn the ghosting boat 180 degrees as the direction changed. The wind never got more than a puff or two and then stopped again. Turned on the iron genny and headed for home.
That was probably the last family sail for the season. I'm going out solo tomorrow for a little while if the weather cooperates but it's supposed to rain in the late afternoon, early evening.

That was taken at least 3 winters ago. The "A" dock that my boat lives at (far left) was shortened by more than half to make enough turning room for new 50' slips on the end of the "B" dock.
