Posted on craigslist that I was looking for help about a Capri 25 I am looking to buy. Mr foster was very helpful and suggested i seek out others here on this forum for questions and general support.
What a great forum and site fullmof info.
Here is my first question?
What are some key things to be looking for specific to Capri 25's before buying and or using for negotiations to purchase?
This boat is in dry dock, just had new bottom completed in the last two months so it is not in water. I want to move it to lake ray Hubbard in rockwall Texas and hate to learn I have a problem after the fact.
Any feedback to share for a new Capri owner - soon to be hopefully.
Leaking Windows, rudder post play, rudder post cracking at deck, flexing at transom at motor mount, rear bulkhead rotting at bottoms, open port locker in cockpit and examine everything, look for water stains, look at deck hardware for crazing and mounting, check winches for play and smoothness. Look at deck at base of mast, check fiberglass, check wires and connection to mast lights, check sheaves, they crack. Look at forstay attachment, check forward hatch and fiberglass and seal. Check mast and boom for all hardware and control lines. Check halyards for wear and conditions. Check sails for wear, rips, tears, repairs. Check sail inventory, jib, 130, 150, main and spinnaker, check spinnaker pole.
Interior, check thruhulls, check sink, check battery, battery box and wood battery holder. Check for water while under this area, there is a hidden bilge area. Check real and holly floor, lift floor up and check for fiberglass cracks from stress or flexing, check keel bolts, they should be stainless no rust and torqued tight. Check main bulkheads at top. Sides, and bottom, check compression post for rot at base, and delamination. Check all storage areas for water.
Halyards 4 Main. Spinnaker, 2 jib. Topping lift, downhaul, Cunningham, boom vang, main sheet, jib sheets, spinnaker sheets, main sheet block control lines, reeling lines, youthful on boom, 2 jib blocks, two spinnaker blocks. 4-6 hp motor, trailer. Ect .......... R There is a porta potty, make sure its clean. I'm sure there is more, hope this helps.
The only thing I would add to Chris's list is to check the base of the spreaders. When I bought my boat I had to replace the spreaders due to fatigue and cracking in the spreader where it connected to the mast. I think you want a pretty rigid but not absolutely rigid connection at this point. Mine were very sloppy and my spreaders drooped badly on the leeward side.
Hey Mike, glad you found the forum. If you're around Lake ray Hubbard this weekend you might want to check this out over at Rush Creek Yacht Club. We'll be racing a C-30 MK II
Received some great input from everybody. Thank You in advance and I'll post what I find this weekend. I'm headed over for a scout at the Capri 25 Saturday afternoon. Until then, Have a Great weekend!
Thanks for sharing. Love the photographs and the stories with each one. I only wish i had the experience of Sailing with my dad and four brothers. Luckily i had several years of sailing with my father on his 50 Tayana. Hopefully ill have some photos soon of my family and i out enjoying the sailboat and our time spent together.
Really feeling at home with so many helpful folks jumping in.
