My club has had issues this year wit out permanent race marks floating away. By the end of te season we had gone from 6 buoys to 2.
Divers were sent down to investigate what was left of the tether systems and report the state of wear etc. Copied and pasted below is what was found. If anyone has suggestions to reduce wear/chafe at the connection points, I'd love to pass it along to the club.
From what i know, there are concrete blocks down there with a steel loop in the top of them. A chain goes from the block up to a stainless steel cable which acts as a tether, connecting the the mark to the chain. In the bottom of each mark, there is a steel loop which conects it to the tether.
Start copy paste here:
Here's an update on the race marks story.
We sent divers down to locate all six concrete blocks.
The primary metal rings attached to each block are in perfect condition.
All chains/fittings were removed from the concrete blocks and brought to the surface.
There was significant wear on all the chains only in the area where they were attached to the stainless steel cables.
We need new chains.
A couple of the stainless steel cables require repair at the looped ends.
One stainless steel cable #4 was missing , presumably because it had failure at both ends.
We need to purchase one new cable #4.
All six concrete blocks are marked with the usual submerged floats about 6 feet below the surface. This will enable easy location for the divers in the spring.
The metal rings on the bottom of each yellow mark may need some welding repair to "beef" them up for next year.
So overall we are doing not too badly. We know what the problems are. We can easily fix everything without much cost over the winter.
Many thanks to Ken and Chris + Ryan(divers) for doing the diving Tuesday night.
Thanks to Ken and Chris (diver) for coming today to complete the job.
