In the November Manatee Cove Marina race for the Gaskin's Cup, Tomm Curran sailed his Catalina 25 Island Time to a 1st place corrected finish!
Unfortunately I did not get a picture of Island Time, but she was really moving! I did get a picture of the happy skipper back at the clubhouse however!!!:
Thanks, but only beating CS by way of our in-house handicapping system. Confetti was by far the class of the field yesterday, out dueling his nemesis in the O'Day 32. It was a great FL fall day with perfect winds (east, 10-15) for our piece of the Banana River.

Tom is being modest. Island Time was WELL Sailed! I did not have my camera in the cockpit yesterday, or I could have captured some GREAT shots of her. The start was great fun with a school of several dolphins circling around right at the line with all the boats doing the same, and then later we saw a gigantic sea turtle that was near by!
Yes, the 32ft O-Day and Confetti had a lot of fun with a lot of luffing matches and quick spinnaker sets on the "twice around" triangle course.
The handicapping system used here REALLY penalizes newly entered and well sailed boats, with the intent to encourage other boats to be "in the mix". I agree totatally with the goals of the local system. However, it does end up with some surprising results for handicaps sometimes, and is re-adjusted after every race.....(if you win, your handicap takes a hit, and if you do poorly, you get some given back). For example, earlier in the year I was giving the O-Day almost 7 minutes per mile!!!(normally under PHRF they give me about 20-30 sec/mile I think). We are much closer on our handicaps now due to the monthly re-adjustments, but at least between the two of us we are only concerned with line honors (which still puts us at a disadvantage against him for most of our wind conditions, but it does serve to keep us on our toes!!!!) And yesterday we took line honors at the start and finish lines, along with beating the O-Day on corrected also. It was sweet!!! <grin>

It still must be a little humiliating every time out when a 25-footer is contesting (and even beating) a 32 at the finish line--regardless of your local corrections.
Great work! (If you can get Confetti and This Side Up on the same water some day, I'll fly in to watch!)

Thanks for the kind words! Yes, we try to rub it in a bit at the clubhouse afterwards during the post race "Trash Talking", especially since they have 3 really good sailors aboard! Its all in fun however!!
And yes, it would be fun to sail Confetti against This Side Up one day! I learn something every time I have gone out for the last 49.5 years! So I am sure I could learn a lot from the This Side Up team!!!

In case you all do not know, in addition to skippering the Cat 25 Island Time, Tom is the Marina Manager of the Manatee Cove Marina here on Patrick AFB on the Banana River...... <grin>
