This weekend was the Wurstfest Regatta - the largest event on Canyon Lake. It runs over 2 weekends - first day for all the board boats and dinghies. This weekend was for the keelboats and multihulls. We were in Non-Spin"B" (handicaps above 200) with 10 other boats. The wind was frightful, 20knots+ with gusts into the 30's. Yesterday we ran a reefed main and a 105% jib and managed to stay upright enough to take two 2nd's and a 4th. Today we shook out the reef and managed two 2nds although the wind was just as bad so we spent a lot of time luff driving. We lost out to a SanJuan 21 which was a rocket ship who took 5 bullets. We did manage to beat him over the finish line twice today but not by enough (he carries a 252 PHRF rating). Now I have muscles hurting that I didn't know I owned and the floor is still going up and down! All in all a real enjoyable weekend.

Congrats Derek! Those are tough conditions (and do not get any easier now that I am 65!!!!!!!!!!)
We had a recent two day regatta in those same conditions and the races were cancelled because the committee boat could not stay on station! They were delayed a week and conditions were better, but I am still hurting like you are!!!!!!

Derek, I'm guessing that SJ-21 was able to get up on plane in those conditions--that'll help them crush their handicap!
"...but you borrow your crew from Larry Ellison..." Unfortunately Dave I'm losing my foredeck guy - he's been promoted to head a division of his company and is moving to Brazil. He was incredible with a 16' whisker pole. I never saw the SJ21 plane but it was quite probable. I have a friend who was helming a Holder 20 and they dropped their jib every time they went to weather - and he's a very experienced racer on the Holder!

No Way!!!
I don't know if I am in awe, disbelief, or very hopeful for the future!!!! <grin>
