Last night I had the pleasure of attending the winter awards banquet for the Brookville Lake Sailing Association, where I sailed for about 25 years. Some of the old crowd, from the earliest days, weren't there, but some of them were, and it was good to see them again. My oldest and dearest friends were there, bringing back memories of all the good times we shared sailing together, laughing on the docks, chartering together, and filling and refilling our paper plates at family picnics. They were there the very first time I ever raced my boat, and although I didn't win, they gave me the encouragement I needed at the time. Some of the young guys who had crewed for me when they were just learning to sail were there to pick up racing awards. Upon seeing me unexpectedly, one of the old timers exclaimed, "I thought you were dead!" (I'm pretty sure he was joking, and even at my advanced age, it seemed pretty funny.) It was really good to see them all again.
