In all this effort to remove the 9.9 engine and measuring for re-cobbection of broken connector, I must have hit my head 5-6 times on the "offset" backstay. Has anyone put on a protective cover? Plastic? wood? foam? Thanks for any suggestions. Bob
Those plastic cable covers, IMO, probably cause more problems than they solve. They're only cosmetic and they hold moisture in. Moisture and steel are not friends. That's particularly true in salt water environments.
You might go by your local hardware store and pick up a length of pipe insulation and throw it on the stay when you're working back there. Or, you could try this:
After I bought my C-25, a rigger recommended that I remove the PO's vinyl covers on the shrouds. I did, and what was under them was worrisome! At a minimum, you want periodic rain to wash the salt and polution off the wire--the covers "protect" them only from getting flushed clean.
Get some small diameter pvc pipe (HD sells 2 ft pieces sometimes) and cut a slit down the length. Easy to take on/off and can be secured on with electrical tape. You may need a table saw to make the cut. If it is closed cell, foam pipe insulation might work, too.
