Coming up with new product names is even more challenging.
Then there's the potential for unintended acronyms . . . a previous boat <i>Ode to Joy</i> became OJ during the famous trial.
Which font you ask Ape-X? We printed the name in 27 different font styles before deciding. Thank goodness for personal computers.
PCP777 brings up a good point. If you're on a smaller inland lake then an uncommon name is not such an issue.
I floated <i>Distorted Reality</i> which got shot down in record time, as did <i>Gemütlichkeit.</i> Meaningful to me, odd to everyone else. So the current boat remains nameless.
Pastmember, Frank, came up with a doozy - <i>Fellowship</i>
I only printe 26 fonts. :O) Big thumbs up to PC's. I just went to the local vinyl guy after choosing and it took him one day to have everything ready. Even helped with a really cool shadow effect. Once we finally buff and polish the topsides, I can apply the name, and break some champagne bottles.
I'm still struggling with the name - I've been letting 'Sunshine' sink in but it just doesn't feel right. My latest thought is 'Escape' but hubby doesn't like it. Sigh....

A friend's boat was named <i>A Better Place</i>. Can you imagine the reaction if his wife were to bump into someone and they asked, "How's Larry?" and she responds, "Oh, he's in <i>A Better Place</i>"
We recently named our new (to us) boat Chakana. Reminds me of your original name Cacique. It is the Inca cross, and symbolizes the Southern Cross (which we hope to see someday). We think it's a really cool name, but other people we've told it to, think it's weird. We haven't actually applied the name to the boat. Luckily, when we bought the boat, it had no name-- (1984 model). I also really like the name Imagine (after the John Lennon song) but hubby doesn't like it.

I like names that have some slightly mysterious meaning that leads to a friendly question... I like a little mirth--one of my favorites was <i>Ragamuffin</i> (which would take a little long to spell with the military alphabet). My latest name, <i>Sarge</i>, often raises a question... It's a special tribute to two people in my life--my late wife's endearing nickname for her beloved mother-in-law. (...and I haven't seen another <i>Sarge</i> anywhere, but maybe that says something else.)
I like <i>Chakana</i>--easy to say, no mystery to pronounce, and asks for an explanation.
Usually by the time the baby comes, most have names already. This thread started back in January, don't you think it's about time the baby is named ? When is the official baby naming ? You going to post a photo of the baby's certificate - On the side of the hull ? Waiting for warmer weather to put the name officialy on and have the baby naming ceremony ? Supposedly, you must conduct the ceremony a specific way for good luck.

Karen's boat had no name--a simple toast, with a libatory splash overboard for Poseidon, is sufficient to record a vessel's original name in his annals.
We're hauling her out on March 9th. The plan was to have a name decided, printed and ready to be applied by then. Hubby likes 'Imagine'. I'm letting that one sink in for a few days. We'll see if it sticks.
Mark is there water in Bakersfield? I've been through there a few times and I sure don't remember any water...

Haha, no water in Bakersfield for our boat.... Thats why we spend our time between Oxnard/Ventura and Huntington Lake outside of Fresno. (good thing she's got a trailer )

My 16 footer is named Voyager. I've always traveled when I was in college, and continued to do so in my job, so it suits me well.
It also reminds me of the Star Trek episode where the crew encountered an automaton ship that called itself "Veejer".
Apparently, as the story goes, the early NASA spacecraft [the one with the 33 1/3 rpm gold record] that was sent out to explore the solar system in 1977 eventually overshot the edge of the solar system and merged with another spacecraft with artificial intelligence and enormous power. It corrupted the original name Voyager, as Veejer, and the rest, as they say, is future history. At least according to Gene Roddenberry.
I still like the name and had <i>Passage</i> not come with an equally interesting and suitable name, I would sorely been tempted to rename her Voyager II.
Well it's official. How did we finally decide you ask? We wrote all of our best names on little bits of paper, scrunched them up into little wads, threw them up in the air and let them land where they would. Then called the dog over to pick. He picked Sunshine. I had the font, color, shadowing all picked out and ordered the lettering before I could have second thoughts.
Thank you everyone for your support and humor through this process. Who would have thought we'd have so much trouble with it. My next boat (if there is a next boat) better come with a name. Next week this time we'll be celebrating with Neptune!

This is one of the best parts! Now admit it--you put a little bacon grease on "Sunshine", right??
