What size sail slugs work best for my standard mast. My haylard is run to the cockpit but it seems that the slugs get bind up in the groove and I have to go to the mast and help.
I have the same problem. I plan on doing as Dave suggested, and adding a coat of SailKote or similar product (some have said Home Depot sells something similar, for much less; I need to find that thread again...)
... and how old are your slugs anyways? You might just want to replace them before they fail. Many stories of the plastic slugs letting go like a zipper on a promdress.
If you're binding and having issue raising/dousing the main:
SailKote is good of course, an annual application or more as needed.
New Slugs - I had a slug break and jam in the mast. Luckily it was the top slug so I could drop the main. We hoisted Eddie's son up there with a flat tip to free it. I ordered all new slugs, plus a few extra, from CD. I was very surprised just how old, brittle and worn out my old ones were when compared to new. The new ones were nice and slick with no wear on them at all. (new of course) Complete replacement took "maybe" 20 minutes.
The results were amazing. I can hoist my main all the way to the top by hand. I only need the winch to apply a little tension if I want it, but really a strong tug will do it. Gotta be careful dropping the main! If I release that halyard, she'll come down fast all by herself!
If you're binding and your slugs are more than say, 5 years old, just get new ones. They're cheap[, easy to replace, and makes a world of difference.
I just replaced mine (having broken 5 of 12 on my tall rig in 25-35 Kt winds last fall) with 3/8" round slugs with s.s. bails that I found at Defender. I have yet to hoist the main with the new slugs but expect to see significant improvement also. My main is an Ulman Loose footed full batten, new in 2006, and my slugs were brittle from just 5 seasons.
I am planning on installing this on my boat sometime in the future, looks like a good option, specially if you will pull the halyard from the cockpit, since it will go through a bunch of blocks and fairleads
