I am starting my third season as a C25 owner (1981 vintage - #2586)and have just joined this organization and this forum. I have harvested a lot of excellent advice from the many posts - thanks! (This is my first post.)

I am ready to install a Nicro solar vent (4") to control the mildew and the "rain forest" I seem to experience - is there any free advice as to the best spot to cut the 4 3/4" hole? I am thinking the best location is centered ahead of the mast base on the cabin roof deck. My logic is that it would be mostly out of the way and would not be likely to be stepped on (by me). (The forward hatch is rather thin and has a slope to it that may not be ideal.) How thick is the cabin roof?

Also, I sail 'Baywynd' out of Rock Hall, MD (Swan Creek Marina). Are there any other C25s nearby?

Thanks in advance!

There is a lot on this subject in the archives. I also have one of these vents and have been thinking about the best location for it.

Putting it into the front hatch is the most popular location that I've seen. My wife likes to lay back on the deck there though, so I don't think it would be my first choice.

Roughly over the head to the side of the mast seems to be the other popular choice. My 1984 boat has the masthead lights buried in the deck there (yours probably does too), so you'd want to be careful to avoid those.

I also want to see if I can find a different trim piece for the interior that allows for using a slightly smaller holesaw. I already have an expensive 4.625" holesaw from installing a transom access hatch and don't want to buy a 4.75" one as well.

If you have not already bought one, the 3" Nicro Day/Night Plus solar vent is more than sufficient, at least for our locale, and requires a somewhat smaller hole. My boat had 2 non-working solar vents when I bought her. One was right behind the anchor locker on the foredeck (in front of the deadlight). That one I replaced with the Day/Night Plus unit and it has worked well. It would not interfere much at all with foredeck lounging. The other one was located on the cabintop, port side and right behind the bulkhead so it was over the main salon, not the head. That placement did not interfere with working at the mast. I elected to keep it as a passive vent rather than replace it like the other because the coachhouse roof was kept covered when we were not on the boat.

This is mine. Over the head. Less noise to bother the person sleeping in the focsle. Too far port and the deck curves. Too far aft and the lines from the mast could interfere. Too far strbrd and it kinda gets in the way when you walk on deck to the mast.

just the discussion.. like you said.. some like it on the hatch, but it gets in the way of the deck candy..

When I contemplated putting in a vent, I had difficulty determining a good spot to reduce the chances of me stepping on or tripping over it as anywhere around the mast wasn't a good spot for me. I liked the idea of putting it in the hatch as this isn't usually stepped on and it will draw fresh air further into the boat from the hatchboards.

I just installed mine this weekend. I installed it on the hatch because I knew that if I screwed something up, I could "just" order a new hatch from CD. When you do the install, if you install it on the hatch, NOTE CAREFULLY that the white trim ring that's supposed to go inside the cabin is too long - it actually sticks up, out of the hatch and above the deck, which causes the vent to not sit properly on the deck (my plan is to trim the ring down; I didn't have the right tools on hand at the boat). Also note that regardless of the installation point, you REALLY want to have some epoxy on hand, so you can properly seal off the wood core that you will expose when you cut the hole.

Jack,
To your question about Rock Hall, have you checked out the owner's map? http://www.zeemaps.com/map?group=198193&x=-97&y=39&z=13&add=1

As I recall, there are a few in that area of the Chesse. Steve Milby might have a better feel for who is there.

Here's mine...but the vent hole was there already. I just pulled off the vent cover from the PO and installed the Nicro Vent in it's place.

But the two other suggestions - Over the head area or in the front hatch both seem like good options for the reasons stated by Ray and Jim.
