Many racing boats now use Webbing with a small poprivet on the top ( boom in compression .. Bails are definitely old technique with holes / corrosion all in the wrong place . The same goes for the vang attachment . it is a double loop of webbing with a D ring in one loop. The loops are threaded onto the boom. The vang and mainsheet shackles attach to the D ring. Needs a lose footed main. The webbing can be placed anywhere along the boom that is free of other fittings. Pressure on one loop (with the D ring) tightens the other loop to the boom. So the windier it gets the tighter the loop gets. To make it; a length of UV resistant webbing (seat belt) that will easily wrap around the boom twice, thread a D ring on the strap then bring the two webbing ends together and flip one end over twice before sewing together with a generous overlap. A SS or brass eyelet will also work instead of the over kill D-ring There are a few finer points to it, like sewing the join at a slight angle, but if you get a strap and wrap it round a pole twice it is easier to picture. A stronger , cheaper and quick solution Graeme ..
