Spent quite a while reading up on anchoring/mooring issues in Florida (prep for our summer cruise) and I found this tool for identifying recognized derelict boats.

Link to the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission site

here are the instructions I pulled from Cruisers.net

quote:
At that url, examine the Legend (rh side), then clik “Queries”. The page there allows you to type in a FL county. Do that, and press Search.
Your county will show problem boats as colored circles. Clik on a given circle, and you’ll see further details about that boat. Stats are in the lower left side of the page. You can compare counties, etc. You can learn dates boats were identified, etc. It’s a valuable tool to see how we progress in ridding our Public waters of problem boats.

If you put your mouse over one of the circled boats and let the pointer change it's icon, then click on the circle and any subsequent photo to view the boat.

As an example, Search for Miami-Dade and navigate to Miami City Hall.

Very interesting tool.

I think homeless people live on some of these.

Actually this is confirmed in this shot. Look at the guys shirt. "Quit your job and move to Key West!"

Case FWSB-11-OFF-001510

People are living on some of these junkers. Sad.

It would seem someone would salvage all the recyclables like the spars etc.

Hmmm...this is interesting. I've been trying to find an inexpensive sailboat trailer, and in some cases the owners are willing to let the trailers go for cheap because they don't want to dispose of the boat that's sitting on it. Apparenly one solution would be to trailer the boat down to Key West, tie it off somewhere, and then swim back to shore!
