I am adding a roller furler to my C25 this year but am confused on the appropriate sail to use for it. As I will be buying a new sail to use with it, what is the appropriate size? Thanks- Tim
Schaeffer is coming out with a new, heavy duty flexible foiled furler designed for boats in the 25 to 26 foot range. The factory folks said it will be available in March. It will use the standard size luff rope, #6 I believe.
If I buy a 25 this weekend, I'll wait until march to get that furler.
The idea of a furling the foresail is that you can reduce sail as the wind increases. I would think that means you want as big a sail as you can get, and can be comfortably rolled onto the furler. I had a 150 recut for my furler when I bought it a couple of years ago. Ad Doug said, very simply, 150!

If you go with the 150 headsail, you may want to have a foam luff put on the new genoa so that it will reef to a better usuable shape. As Steve said earlier, predominant sailing conditions generally will dictate what size of sail would be best, then talk to a reputable sailmaker to discuss options on the sail.
