Hi all, does anyone have experience with a Newport 31 or Ericson 32? I'm researching boats, including the ones from the other thread I started, and came across these two that seem to be really nice. I have almost no experience with anything other than my C25, so any opinions are appreciated.
Old boats are very space inefficient but beautiful. There is an Ericson 32 at our club and it is arguably the prettiest boat, her lines are beautiful. The interior of a Newport 30 at our club is very "nautical" and the freeboard is low enough to get on the boat easily from the dock. I am willing to bet a Catalina 30 has more usable space inside than either but either also make a Catalina 30 look like a station wagon.
Thanks guys. Frank, the Ericson 32 is a 1985 and the Newport 31 is a 1991, so not too terribly old. You are correct about the C30 though, I've read some comments on other websites echoing your thoughts.
I assume you've figured out that it's sitting at Sandusky Harbor Marina. Saves shipping costs. Spring launch is included in winter storage fees. <hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></font id="quote"></blockquote id="quote">

That's the one John. I actually spoke to the broker about it this morning and he was pretty candid about it. The current owner hadn't put much effort in maintaining the boat. He said it's not as nice as the pictures. None of the instruments work, the cushion fabric is splitting, the exterior shows some bumps and bruises. He has no idea the condition of the engine. It sat on the hard all last year. He said the owner might take $21k for it, rather than the $27.9k it's listed for. I'm less keen on it now.
Unfortunately, I was told by Sandusky Harbor Marina that the max length for their marina is 32 feet, so that's my new limit. :(
By the way, what's the depth of Sandusky Bay? I looked at a chart online from NOAA and it looks pretty shallow. Any worry about bumping bottom?
A Practical Sailor subscription is probably worth it for their online reviews. They have a review of the Ericson 32 (all 3 versions are covered), but not the Newport 31.
I looked at a Newport 28 when we bought our Catalina 25 and build quality was terrible. I don't know if that is true of the 31 too, or if it is a higher level boat.
Check with the marina to see if they mean 32' from the front of the bow pulpit to the farthest rear part of the stern, or 32' as measured by the manufacturer (which doesn't include railings). My marina cares about the maximum overall length including railings and bow anchor which means that nominal 30' boats (like a Catalina 30) don't fit into a 30' slip. My Pearson 28' is about 29'6" as measured by the marina, but 28'6" as measured by Pearson due to the bow pulpit overhang.
That must be a new restriction, Ben. Are you sure you're not confusing them with the Sailing Club???? There are a number of boats longer than 32' in the marina. In fact, they eliminated about half the 25' docks a couple of years ago to install 50 footers. I was on the hard all this year so I wasn't out there much. I wonder what's up. They've had one boat out there that's so long they don't even haul it in the winter. They park it in the launch well after everything else is out and put bubblers around it to prevent freezing.
I replied to your e-mail about the bottom. Not a big worry. There are skinny spots near the entrance to the lake and around Johnson's Island. I had a scare once while sailing directly in the direction of a guy that I suddenly realized was walking around his dingy in ankle deep water!!!! No worries, though. Lot's of room to turn away from that area.
John, I must have misunderstood the email from the Sandusky Harbor Marina rep; I checked back with him after your comment above, and you're right, there is no 32 foot restriction, so now I'm considering 34 and 36 footers again. :)
That's a good idea, Putz, I'll give that a shot. :)
