Question for the Spinnaker experts.
I don't know if I have a standard factory spinnaker pole or not, but my pole has two steel cables from each end of the pole attached to a ring at the center of the pole. This is in addition to the line that releases the catch at each end of the pole. Obviously, one side is for the topping lift and the other for a down haul.
Now, I raced on a J-24 today and that boat had a pole without the cables and just two rings attached to the center of the pole. They used Twings lines in lieu of the down haul so the only line attached to the pole (other than the guy) was the topping lift. The ring at the center of the pole seemed to work a lot smoother than my pole with the cables. I can see that loading on the pole would be different, but is there that much load on a Capri spinnaker pole from the topping lift that would require the cable arrangment. We only sailed in 10 kts today, so maybe higher winds need the cable arrangement. I'm rigging for the Twing lines now and will eliminate the down haul.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I’ve raced both Capri’s and J24s. I like the center topping lift as opposed to the bridle; just less to get hung up on. However, in lighter air and choppy water, your spinnaker trimmer will be thankful of the downhaul. This is especially true on the tight reach, when the pole will be forward, and the twing on the guy will not do much to hold the pole tip down.

Thanks Andy_334, I sail on a small lake with plenty of light air and little wave disruption except for the occasional large power boat. I'll heed your advice and keep the down haul available along with the Twing lines. I just want to get rid of the bridles if that won't be detrimental.
