While there is some useful info there, I made it to the windex part before I burst out laughing, for the same reason. There is no description of what a windex is or does. I could just see a newbie putting a bottle of windex up there and looking at it for guidance. But my wife thought a wind generator was something you could turn on to make wind.
Sailing is simple with a decent understanding of physics. But I guess they don't teach that anymore.
I think they are both well-written, concise summaries that beginners can get their hands around pretty easily. Since the vast majority of Mac customers are newbies, Macgregor is doing their customers a service by providing that documentation.
I think we should be encouraging more people to get into sailing, not making fun of them. My father didn't have the patience for sailboats so I was on my own when I took up the hobby. The stuff I read at the start wasn't that different from those links, and it was enough to get me going on a rented sailing dinghy. Lots of us weren't born into it, and we started pretty much where the Mac documentation starts.
I had loads of physics in college and graduate school, and I can tell you that it is no substitute for a practical tutorial on sailing. After you've done some sailing you can look back on it and see how the physics principles apply. But I suspect you'd be just as cynical if a newbie told you "I don't need sailing lessons - I had physics in college!"
quote:
While there is some useful info there, I made it to the windex part before I burst out laughing, for the same reason. Typing "sailboat windex" into Google gives the answer in two seconds.
Ok, what about the wind generator? LOL! Sailing was pretty obvious to me. Wind on the nose, no go. Wind on the side, or er, beam = go. Wind behind = go... For me it was pure logic. Now figuring out the rabbit around the tree and thru the hole bowline took a few tries.
