After my granddaughter's basket ballgame I decided to go for an afternoon sail. Nice day with winds from 8-10mph with a few gust higher and temp. about 60. I sail on the Ross Barnett Reservoir located just outside Jackson, Ms. The lake is about 3 miles wide and 20 mile long. I decide to head up the lake. All is going good speed about 4.3kn until I come to a sudden stop. The GPS map reads "Submerged Road". My GPS must accurate. Boat spins around with the wind coning over the transom. I know the proper way should be to back off but I don't think that will work for me now. So,I turn on the motor give it a little gas go below and start cranking up the keel. After it's up only 6-8 inches I'm moving again. I turn the motor off, put the keel back down, mark the spot on my GPS, grab a beer and turn on the depth gauge. Sail the rest of the afternoon. Back at the dock the GPS reads total miles traveled 15 at a ave. speed of 4.4kn and a max. speed of 5.8kn.
All in all a nice day on the water for a Saturday in February.

I have accumulated a lot of little skull and crossbones icons on my GPS chartplotter from similar experiences!!! (however I can't crank up the keel).
I used to love to sail on Ross Barnett! Back in the early to mid 60's we were racing my Thistle with the Delta Sailing Club in Memphis, TN (actually on Arkabutla Resivoir), and loved to come down for the big regattas there! Your note brought back a lot of good memories (about Ross Barnett, not about grounding!! <grin>)
Chuck there is still a lot of racing on the REZ. I crew on a Beneteau First 29 and we race with the yacht club most Sunday afternoons. There is also a Beer Car race on Saturday afternoon and I crew on a J-24. There active fleets of J-22, Catalina 22,Flying Scots and a PHRF. The yacht club also sponsors a spring and fall regatta for all comers.
