I use a Prosport8 charger that I purchased last year to charge my battery. Since I am new at sailing and didn't want to make a mistake, I never permanently mounted it. I connected it to the battery in the starboard settee, set the unit next to the compartment bulkhead, plugged the power cord into an extension cord and plugged that into the outlet in the galley.
Now I'm looking for advise on the "right" and best way to install the charger keeping in mind that I also want to install a second battery this year (don't know where yet). How is a/c power to the charger controlled - plugged in or an in-line switch?
My automatic charger is hard wired to my AC buss, fused at the buss of course. I am charging or monitoring whenever I am plugged in to SP. You could add a switch parallel to and separate from the AC main if you wanted. I like being able to leave the rest of the AC off and still charge. I also have 2 batteries, so the charger + connects to the + output on my selector switch and charges the selected battery.
When I took possession of my boat, I traced back the wiring for the battery charger before plugging it in to SP. GLAD I DID: It had the plug, which was plugged into an extension cord. The plug was sitting in the bilge, and the cords laying against the hull. One iend of the extension cord was cut off and then spliced into the Starboard outlet (from underneath). Insulation was worn on the outer sheath AND inner wires exposing bare wires. A second battery charger was located behind the DC panel in the dumpster.
Currently I lift the cushions and plug in a battery tender when at dock. Maybe this year i will finish the wiring project started 3years ago. :O)
If you want to retain a plug in,and switching capability add a switched outlet.
I installed my charger on the bulkhead aft of the companionway steps. It is wired into the shore power with a circuit breaker next to the electical panel. When it is on I can see the lights to see if its is charging or fully charged. The breaker allows me to shut it off and leave the rest of the shore power on.
