Does anyone know when they started making the retrofit gudgeons?

Catalina Direct sold a "heavy-duty upgrade" gudgeon starting around 2000, soon after I bought my C-25. It had the braces under the horizontal plate, and tubular steel for the pintle, instead of just a hole in the plate. I tried and rejected them because I couldn't get the alignment exactly right between the tubes on the two gudgeons, so the pintles bound rather severely in them. Now, they've modified the gudgeon to include a nylon bushing that might have helped... but that was too late. I just went back to my originals, which IMHO were plenty strong. My replacement balanced rudder eliminated the flutter I had felt, so I was satisfied.

What Dave is describing about a binding situation is true and might happen even with the newer nylon insert type of gudgeons. When I replaced mine this happened. The original pintles might not be in perfect alignment with each other because they didn't have to be to go through the holes in the flat plate on the original gudgeons but with the new style with the nylon inserts they create a tube that the pintles have to get inserted into. If the pintles are on a slightly different angle from each other you wont be able to insert them into the gudgeons. Think of a door hidge, If the two peices of the hindge are at a slightly different angle to each other you wont be able to insert the pin. You might get lucky and they might line up but mine were slightly off and needed just a little persuasion. After sailing less than an hour they loosened up and now fit perfectly. If they are way off of alinment then you will have to reset the pintles or the gudgions to get them inline.

Thanks!
In my 1988 will I have to cut the inspection port to replace the upper gudgeon, or are the screws the type that can be removed and replaced without getting to the other side?

I'm asking because I am 4 1/2 hours from where my boat is stored/sailed. I am planning a spring trip to do work on boat prior to launching, and I am hoping to have all of the right parts and tools with me.

I'm about 90% sure that you'll need to cut the inspection port. Instead of a nut there is a brass threaded backing plate that is held there with sealant, but it will probably fall out when you remove the third bolt. I don't think that this changed between 1984 and 1988.

I had to cut the inspection hole on my 87. There was a brass backing plate with nuts.

I had to cut the inspection hole in my 84.I believe the bolts are bigger on the replacement. There was a owner in my matina thar did have his rudder come off when the screws backed out.

The lower gudgeon almost fell off Passage on a trip not far from New London and The Race. I heard a weird clunking sound with each passing wave and couldn't figure out what it was. Shortly the tiller got squirrelly and thinking I had somehow snagged a lobster pot, I peered over the transom and noticed one of the bolts had backed most of the way out, I realize how much trouble I was in!
Shortly thereafter I climbed up into the quarterberth and was able to use some adhesive to stick the nut onto the backing plate and fished the bolts back in and socked them all down securely.

I used a ring stand post which was over three feet tall and the exact fit. That allowed me to align the gudgeons, a plumb bob helps too.
