Yesterday it was over 70 degrees and the winds were light and variable, 10 knots or less. We made an offer and had a very nice sail on the 77 Catalina 25 in the Long Beach harbor.
The boat pointed well in light airs, and felt solid, stable and fun. I loved the tillerpilot, but my 11 year old daughter wanted to be at the helm all day (that was fine with me!). We made about 5 knots while the wind was good. We tested the boat on all points of sail, tacking, gybing, reaching and running. With roller furling and all lines led aft it was really easy to sail. We did plenty of motoring as the wind died.
The boat motorsailed nicely, the Honda 8 HP seemed to be plenty of engine. At 1/3 throttle the little boat was already trying to get over her bow wave, so it seems to have a lot of reserve power. The Honda has a large prop and is a torquey motor.
Since you can steer the motor, docking and slow speed maneuvering was very easy, especially compared to the 20,000 lb powerboat my crew is used to.
The whole family had fun and we all want to go sailing today so I guess that is the sign of a good sea trial. The boat is in very good mechanical condition but is going to take a lot of work to make it look like a yacht again and to be equipped the way we want for cruising. For me at least, that is 1/2 the fun of ownership.
Jim it sounds like you a doing all the right things. Hope the survey goes well for you. Boy I wish my girls were 12 again. The kids dont sail much with us anymore and I realy miss it. My wife and I both grew up in tthe Newport Beach area and its was a wonderful place back in the 60s.
Jim, it sounds like the boat got you, and I hope the survey is a good one. You going in with your eyes wide open, and taking it nice and slow. Looking forward to welcoming you as the newest member (officially) to the family.
