Should I polish/wax the topsides before or after I paint the bottom?

I paint first. A little wax on the paint is no problem--a little paint on wax is a problem.

for me it was a matter of priority... bottom paint cannot be avoided. deck/topsides are merely icing.

Since wax interferes so greatly with adhesion of the paint, I always paint first out of concern that some of the wax might find its way to the bottom. I generally try not to even wash the hull above the waterline before painting the bottom, since so many detergents have a little wax in them, and even if they don't they might take some wax off the hull and move it to the bottom.

It might all be superstition, but that's what I do.
