In not even 100% sure if the boat I purchased is a SR or a TR. I was assuming it was a SR since the mast was similar in length to the boat. Are measurements taken of the mast from end to end?

When measuring for a roller furler are all SR and TR measurements the same respectively or do I need to take actual measurements of my boat? I would like to purchase the roller before my friends have their "mast raising party".

How can I tell if I have an iron or lead keel? The are some cracks near the bottom of the keel and I wasn't sure what to think of them.

Thanks.

The manuals & brochures section on the left has rigging measurements

http://www.catalina-capri-25s.org/manbro/om79-1.asp

The standard rig mast is 28', and the TR mast is 30'.

Not 100% about keel, but I think 1978 would probably be iron.

The '78s are all cast iron, essentially bare. The switch to enapsulated lead was around '83. The cracks you're seeing are probably in the layers of paint that have accumulated on the rusting iron--basically just a cosmetic thing. Some folks have stripped down to bare metal, applied "rust reformers", barrier coats, etc... and had pretty keels for a few years. Yours actually looks pretty good compared to many. I wouldn't call it a high priority.

Tall rigs normally have a "T" on the sail bag

Measuring the mast is the most reliable method. 30' == tall, 28' == standard.

If you have a photo of it with the mast up I could tell you. The tall mast boom sits a foot lower. This may change though if custom sails were made for the boat (some people order them with 1' less luff length to

From the factory the tall mast upper shrouds connected to the outside holes on the chainplates, while the standard connected to the inside. Who knows if they are still in the factory place after 35 years though, especially on a trailered boat.

Kyle, we have the same year boat. Definitely interested in seeing pictures of your boat as you clean and repair her. I am building a GIN Pole with winch, so that I can raise the mast by myself, on or off the water. There is a guy that posted his video on YouTUbe and does this in order to go under bridges. I just really like the control over the mast no matter where you are in the raising or lowering process.

I have the same cracking at the bottom of my keel. I just intend to lightly sand the crack open, paint it with a rust inhibitor and then cover it with bottom anti foul paint along with the rest of the hull. I am not sure that I need to fill it with anything, however maybe someone out there has a recommendation.
